The self-proclaimed Roman history enthusiast will look into Rome's major figures including Romulus and Julius Caesar, and will discover how the small city was able to conquer the world for nearly 100 years.

Lamb will travel across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East in the four-part series, visiting major sites and finding artefacts and documents from Roman life.

The presenter said: "From exploring Roman sewers and slums to epic battlefields, from the ancient walls of Rome inside a busy train station to diving among the still-intact ruins of villas in the playground of the rich - this series is showing me Rome in a way I only ever dreamed of."

Executive producer John Farren said: "It's the greatest story never told - yet. If you only watch one series on the real history of Rome, watch this one."

Channel 5's Simon Raikes added: "The early history of Rome is a timeless epic of conquest, social upheaval and high politics. It features a remarkable cast of characters - heroes, schemers, villains and murderers.

"Add in the latest historical research, some truly fabulous locations and Larry's extraordinary and infectious passion for the subject, and I think we're all in for a real treat."

Last year, Gavin & Stacey star Lamb told Digital Spy that he doubts the comedy will return.
