Alan Scott, created by artist Martin Nodell, first appeared in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. The character was introduced to DC's 'New 52' universe in the first issue of Earth Two earlier this month.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio previously announced that the mystery character will go on to become one of the "most prominent" gay heroes in the DC Universe.

Marvel Comics will tackle the topic of gay marriage in June with the release of Astonishing X-Men #51, in which Northstar and his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu will tie the knot.

Both Marvel and DC have been hit by criticism from conservative Christian group One Million Moms for addressing the subject matter.
