Games out this week: 'Diablo 3', 'Max Payne 3', 'Sonic 4: Episode 2'

A big release week beckons as three huge franchises get anticipated sequels, and there's something for everyone, from a downloadable platformer to a time-sinking dungeon crawler.

Diablo III

Release date: May 15 (worldwide)
Platforms: PC

Blizzard's long-awaited role-playing game finally sees the light of day. Set 20 years after the events of the last game, it offers stacks of new features, including an online auction house, increased interaction with NPCs through Followers and Artisans, and a post-game Hardcore mode for a ton of new items and equipment to discover.

Sonic 4: Episode 2

Release date: May 15 (worldwide)
Platforms: Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, iOS, PC

The belated follow-up to 2010's Episode 1 features four new stages inspired by classic Sonic levels. As well as fan-pleasing tweaks to its physics and art direction, a second player can join the fun as Tails through local co-operative play and online.

Max Payne 3

Release date: May 18 (Europe), May 15 (North America)
Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3

Max Payne brings back the famous grizzled hero after an eight-year absence, this time taking his high body count to the streets of Brazil. New multiplayer sees Bullet Time make its online debut, and it is joined by a number of clever online modes to help set it apart from other multiplayer shooters.
