'Tomb Raider' won't be released on Wii U

By
Tomb Raider's upcoming franchise reboot will not be released for the Wii U, it has been confirmed.

Development of the game started "quite a while before Wii U was announced", explains Crystal Dynamics' Karl Stewart, adding that "it would not be right to try and port it across".

"When we started developing the game we made a conscious decision that it was all about building the game for a platform and making sure the game was specific to that platform," he revealed on the Crystal Habit Podcast.

"If we started building a game for the Wii U we would build it very differently and we would build it with unique functionality," he concluded.

A MAC version of Tomb Raider was also confirmed. Meanwhile, region-specific Collector's Editions were described as a "certainty".

Announced in late 2010, Tomb Raider will be an origin story for Lara Croft, seeing her shipwrecked and stranded on a Pacific island.

The open-world title will see Lara's abilities improve over time, providing her with new tools, gear and athletic prowess to access new areas of the island.

Tomb Raider will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year.
