Meryl Streep jokes: 'Half of America is mad I won a third Oscar'

By
Meryl Streep has joked that she is 'sad' about winning her third Academy Award.

The actress took home the 'Best Actress' award for The Iron Lady on Sunday (February 26) and admitted in her acceptance speech that America was likely upset that she had won the prize again.

"When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, 'Oh no... Her again!' But, whatever," Streep quipped from the Oscar stage.

Streep was asked by Entertainment Tonight how she felt about her third Oscar triumph following the award ceremony.

"Sadly," she humorously answered. "I had been reading the blogs in the awards run-up and I had a fairly full sense of how the momentum was going… I felt that, 'Oh, God, half of America is really mad now that I won'."

Streep previously won a 'Best Supporting Actress' Academy Award for Kramer vs. Kramer and 'Best Actress' for Sophie's Choice.

The star's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady also earned her a BAFTA and Golden Globe.

Streep co-stars with Steve Carell and Tommy Lee Jones in Great Hope Springs, opening on August 10 in the US and January 4, 2013 in the UK.
