The 24 star revealed that he was approached to play the superhero sidekick, but rejected the opportunity because he didn't realize Burton was about to make "the coolest movie ever".
"I'd just finished Stand by Me and Young Guns about the time that Warner Bros were making the first Batman film with Michael Keaton and I got a call which asked me if I would be interested in playing Robin," On the Box quotes Sutherland as saying.
"I was like, 'As in Robin with tights? No!' I didn't realize they were going to make the coolest movie ever! They didn't have a Robin in the end, but I was only 19 so my agent could have helped me out a bit on that one."
British actor Danny Dyer recently claimed that he auditioned to play Robin for the Joel Schumacher Batman movies.
Sky1 will air Sutherland's new series Touch in the UK. It premieres on Tuesday, March 20 at 8pm, while the show's first season resumes on March 22 on Fox in the US.
