'Bridesmaids' producer Judd Apatow: 'Women are just as funny as men'

Judd Apatow has suggested that Bridesmaids proves women are as funny as men.

Bridesmaids broke box office records and garnered Oscar nominations for Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. The film's producer Apatow has now said the accolades were long overdue for female comics.

"It is kind of silly, I thought this was the country of Lucille Ball. To me, I've never understood why there is any question about are women as funny as men," the Bridesmaids producer told CNN.

Apatow went on to comment that he's pleased that Wiig, McCarthy and other comic actresses are receiving the critical praise that they deserve.

"I think a lot of studios today are run by women, and we are entering a time when a lot of women have evolved in Second City and Upright Citizens Brigade and wanted to become writers and comedians," he explained. "So we are seeing that come to fruition."

Chris O'Dowd recently suggested that a Bridesmaids sequel is a bad idea because it could spoil the memory of the original film.
