The actor, who plays Captain Kirk, said that the new movie has a "really big story" alongside its comic elements.
Pine told Total Film: "We're not making Batman. That's not our deal.
"There's comedy, which I think JJ [Abrams] does a great job of, but, like the first one, there's some serious issues being dealt with. And I'd say the threat is even greater in this one."
Earlier this year, Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the film's central villain, but details have yet to emerge about his character.
"The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening," added Pine. "It's relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places you'd never expect.
"The arc is huge for all the characters. It's a really big story - I can't hype it enough!"
Star Trek 2 also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg. The film - which has been partially shot in IMAX - is due to be released worldwide on May 17, 2013.
