Lupita Nyong'o, Gwendoline Christie join Star Wars Episode 7 cast

Lupita Nyong'o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie have joined the cast of Star Wars Episode VII.

The pair's involvement in the JJ Abrams-directed sequel, which is currently shooting at London's Pinewood Studios, was confirmed through the official Star Wars website today (June 2).

Nyong'o won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award earlier this year for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Christie plays Brienne of Tarth in HBO's Game of Thrones and has a role in the forthcoming Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

Lucasfilm president and Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy said: "I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII. It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

First picture of the Star Wars: Episode 7 cast


Episode VII's cast includes Star Wars veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker, who'll all reprise their roles from the original trilogy.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow are newcomers to the space saga.

Star Wars Episode VII will open in cinemas on December 18, 2015.
