Usher on new album 'Looking 4 Myself': "It was a rebirth"

By
Usher has described his new album as a "rebirth".

The singer's Looking 4 Myself is his seventh studio outing. In a new interview, he spoke about the creativity behind his new album, a force he said has been lacking on some of his previous records.

"It was damn near a rebirth," Usher told Reuters.

"I felt open and creative because I didn't have anything in my mind," he continued. "At some point, after making music for a long time, you have to find very new creative and innovative ways to do what you love."

He went on to admit that he has felt limited creatively in the past.

"I've felt restricted in a lot over the last several years and maybe it's because I was holding myself back," he said. "Maybe I felt like I needed to conform to some specific standard. I got to the point where I said, 'I gotta go with what I feel and hopefully people will follow me'."

Last month, Usher previewed a track featuring Pharrell Williams from his upcoming album.

Looking 4 Myself will be released in the UK on June 12 and a day later in the US.
