The group have shifted more than a million copies of each of their two albums in the States over the last 12 months, Billboard reports.
The band's latest set Take Me Home has sold another 127,000 copies this week, bringing its sales total to 1.04 million.
Meanwhile, their debut LP Up All Night - released on March 13 in the US - has sold 1.51 million units.
The last act to achieve the same feat was Kenny Chesney in 2005 with January's Be As You Are: Songs from an Old Blue Chair and November's The Road and the Radio.
One Direction's LPs are currently the third and eighth best-selling records of the year in America. Adele holds the lead with 4.03 million sales of 21, while Taylor Swift's Red is at two with 2.59 million.
