Nicki Minaj: Pink Friday Roman Reloaded
To class Nicki Minaj as a bit of an eccentric is one hell of an understatement. "I done put the pressure to every thug I knew/ Quack quack to a duck and a chicken too," she quips as alter ego Roman Zolanski in the opening track of her new album. But flitting between herself and her gay male persona is merely the tip of the iceberg on an album that contains multiple personalities.

Whether it's the brilliantly bizarre gender-bending serenade on 'Come On A Cone' ("I'll put my d**k in your face") or genuine heartbreak from past struggles in 'Champion' ("Cause they killed my little cousin, Nicholas/ But my memories only have the images"), Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded never fails to keep you on your toes throughout its largely hip-hop-dominated first half. Even Chris Brown collaboration 'Right By My Side' allows the swaggering Queens-born princess to expose her vulnerable side through an R&B-fuelled ditty.

Current single 'Starships' acts as the LP's signifier that she has strutted into an altogether more flamboyant venue. 'Pound The Alarm' and 'Automatic' keep the party jumping as adrenaline-pumped dance stompers packed with the star's tongue-lashing couplets and too-rude-for-nan humor. 'Whip It' offers a seductive slice of Euro-tinged beats and synths that flirt with your ears like a fabulously menacing Vengaboys classic.

As if that wasn't enough, Minaj continues to flex her pop muscle on 'Marilyn Monroe' - a radio-ready ballad that deals with the rapper's (somewhat surprising) insecurities over an ear-snagging piano riff and chorus. By the end of all 19(!) tracks we'd forgive anyone for feeling disorientated by the genre-hopping collection, which is about as thrillingly unpredictable as a conversation with Jedward. But then again, this is Nicki Minaj we're talking about.
