Tom Hooper's film adaptation is now bound to provoke the same reaction in its viewers, with the likes of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway tugging at the heartstrings.
Two such viewers were the parents of brothers Ryan and Kevin Ferguson, who joined them to watch Les Misérables during the festive period.
The siblings filmed their parents' tearful reaction after they got back into their car, with the whole family giggling at how much they cried during the film.
The Fergusons' father laughs hysterically at how ridiculous it is that the family cried less when actual family members had died in comparison to fictional characters in the film.
He laughs: "We've been to funerals and been less upset... We've been to funerals of family members and cried less."
Russell Crowe - who plays Javert in the film - has helped the video go viral by tweeting a link to the YouTube clip, describing it as "classic".
Les Misérables is currently playing in the US and out on January 11, 2013 in the UK.
