"Dennis won't be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return," a representative for Coronation Street told The Mirror.

Lowrie originally played Elsie Tanner's (Pat Phoenix) son Dennis from 1960 to 1968.

He returned to the role in 2011, saying at the time that he was truly enjoying portraying Dennis once again.

The actor achieved a Guinness World Record for his return to the soap after a 43-year gap.
