'Smash's Theresa Rebeck to step down as showrunner

By
Smash creator Theresa Rebeck has decided to step down as show runner.

Rebeck, who has been involved with Smash since it began and wrote the first three episodes, will still be an executive producer on the NBC Broadway drama, and may also continue to write scripts for the show.

Rebeck will, however, no longer be involved in the day-to-day running of the show as she seeks to return to her theatre career, according to Deadline.

It was announced earlier today that the musical drama - starring Debra Messing, Jack Davenport and Katharine McPhee - has been renewed for a second season after it averaged a 2.6 demo rating in its first season so far.

Recently, Smash guest star Bernadette Peters confirmed that she will appear in the season finale. She added: "The show's going to go on that night, so she comes to see the show, basically. But I don't want to give anything away."

Other executive producers for the second season of Smash will include Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
