The NBC musical drama has been picked up for another run, but execs Neil Meron and Craig Zadan admitted that the show is still finding "its footing".
"It's common for all first-season shows to go through a shakedown," Meron told TVLine. "And I think what's happened [with Smash]."
He added: "As the episodes continue, you'll see certain things slip away, and focuses and emphasis shifted."
Zadan also suggested that the second season offers a chance to evaluate "what worked and what didn't work" about the show's first year.
"[We'll] correct it, put it on course, and hopefully make it bigger and better," he said.
Smash creator Theresa Rebeck recently stepped down as showrunner, reportedly in order to return to her theatre career.
The series continues on Mondays at 10/9c on NBC. In the UK, Smash will air on Sky Atlantic.
