Matt Davis has been cast as the male lead in drama pilot Cult.

The CW project, from Gossip Girl's Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, will focus on a string of mysterious disappearances linked to a television show, also titled Cult.

The Vampire Diaries star Davis will play Jeff, a journalist blogger who is searching for his missing brother.

The character will team with production assistant Skye (Jessica Lucas) to investigate the disappearances, reports Deadline.

Davis's casting means that he will no longer be a series regular on The Vampire Diaries, though he may return for guest appearances.

His additional credits include roles on Damages and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Other stars attached to Cult include Robert Knepper (Prison Break) and Alona Tal (Supernatural).

The pilot has been written by Rockne O'Bannon, whose previous credits include The Twilight Zone, Farscape and V.
