Rachel Brown and Dave Brown Jr have been crowned the winners of the 20th season of The Amazing Race.

The husband and wife from Madison in Wisconsin triumphed in the CBS competition to take home the $1m grand prize in a finale which saw the teams travel to Japan and Hawaii.

After learning of their victory, a tearful Rachel said: "This race has been just amazing. I can't even tell you what it's done for our relationship... because when Dave was gone for a year [on service in Iraq] it was so hard."

Californian border patrol agents Art Velez and JJ Carrell finished in second place.

"It was a spectacular journey and because we didn't win doesn't diminish it, right, Art?" Carrell said at the finish line. "We won and lost together."

"To experience what we've experienced, it is worth more than a million dollars. It's priceless," he added in confessional after the result was announced.

Rachel and army officer Dave arrived at the finish line first and were applauded by previous contestants who believed that they had won. However, the couple were then informed by Phil Keoghan that they had not completed a challenging Hawaiian-themed roadblock involving a traditional sledge.

They completed the task successfully ahead of Velez, who struggled to grasp the technique required on the sledge, and Carrell. The couple also broke the record for most legs won during a season of The Amazing Race, winning eight out of twelve.

"I believe this is eight and a half victories since we already saw Phil once," Dave joked as they raced to the finish line.

Rachel Reilly and Brendon Villegas - formerly contestants on CBS show Big Brother - finished in third place.

"The Amazing Race has tested our relationship in ways I didn't think were possible... [but] we know that at the core is just an amazing love for one another," Villegas said, while Reilly added that she would cherish the "amazing" experience for the rest of her life.

Reilly and Villegas has struggled earlier in the final leg when they realized that they were about to complete a leg of the journey incorrectly - taking a taxi instead of one of the helicopters from the infield as per instructions - and had to return to start it again.

Earlier, couple Vanessa Macias and Ralph Kelley had been eliminated from the show after finishing the 11th leg of the Race in fourth place.

At their exit, Kelley described the competition as "a wonderful experience for us, and I think we're a lot closer because of it".

"From here on out, it's plain sailing," Macias added.

The Amazing Race has already been renewed for a 21st season by CBS.
