'Project Runway: All Stars': Badgley Mischka guest judge, designer exits

By
The second episode of Project Runway: All Stars sees the designers faced with a race against the clock to design a "high society gown" fit for a night out at the opera. Angela announces the challenge as well as this week's guest judges - design team Mark Badgley and James Mischka.

The men reveal that they will look for a "true couture touch" that's "feminine and soft" during the runway show, and urge the contestants to go for a unique angle on more classic looks. Angela also announces that the designers will have $350 (£228) to spend on materials - but only one day to complete their gowns.

In the workroom, the designers begin sketching their ideas. The tension is high, with Mondo and Sweet P both admitting that they are nervous and feel slightly out of their elements. There's not much time to worry, however, before the group heads over to Mood to choose their fabrics. A slight argument also comes up between Michael C and April when they both gravitate towards red fabric, though Michael then moves on to a black jersey, instead.

Sweet P feels that Austin has an edge on this challenge, which he agrees with, admitting that it's the last challenge that he would ever want to fail. Michael C feels that couture needs to be respected but feels that he's up to getting everything done in time. He begins with the most detailed aspects of his piece first and seems to make good progress.

Joanna then arrives to talk to the designers about their pieces. Austin tells her that he definitely feels the pressure of high expectations. However, Gordana thinks that it's not a big deal and that he should just get on with things since evening gowns are his specialty. Joanna questions April's use of time as she is hand-dyeing ombre, though she feels confident with her approach.

Michael C impresses Joanna with the "dramatic" nature of his work, though she is concerned with how a woman's body will look in the dress. Kara also has a lot to answer for, as Joanna wonders if her chosen pastel fabric will seem more like bridalwear than something sophisticated and fit for the opera. Anthony faces the same difficulty, though he insists that his dress will be "more forward-thinking" than a wedding dress.

Mondo pinpoints Kara as the weakest designer in the room as she is not an efficient worker and still seems to be far behind the rest of the group. With only 30 minutes left in the day, Anthony still has a lot of foundation work to do before he can begin accessorising and each of the designers scramble to complete as much as they can before they must stop working.

At the runway, host Angela Lindvall, Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman are joined by Mark Badgley and James Mischka to judge the designs.

Austin is named the winner of the challenge, with all of the judges loving his "fresh and classic" gold lame gown with black tulle accents. Isaac appreciates the modesty of the piece, while Mark thinks it's perfect and could be sold in stores today. Georgina would like to have seen the bustline cut slightly lower but admits that her complaint is minor at best. Angela also appreciates the dress's "flawless" workmanship.

"This challenge means a lot to me personally, coming from judges like you who I have respected for a very long time," Austin says about his victor. "It's tremendous - thank you very much."

Michael C also receives high praise for his elaborately beaded and feathered black gown. Isaac can't believe he made it in a day as it's "shockingly perfect" and describes it as "Kim Kardashian at the opera". However, he admits that not every woman could wear it. Georgina loves that he used matte jersey and applauds all the beading and feathering, as well as for meeting the $350 budget to create something so exquisite.

Anthony's "vampy and sexy" white floor-length gown is also popular, with all of the judges agreeing that he brought a new profile to what could have been just a boring white dress. While everyone loves the draping and modernity, Georgina questions his use of accessories, wondering if the leather gloves detract from its elegance.

The judges were less impressed with Kara's flower print strapless ballgowns. Isaac thinks that it should have been "utterly perfect", but seemed to be missing a big element that he couldn't put his finger on. Everyone questions her decision to put a small bow on the back, with Mark claiming that the stitchwork looked somewhat sloppy. Georgina says that while it's pretty, it lacks all personality.

Meanwhile, Isaac congratulates April on being brave enough to use color but thinks that dyeing fabric is not a great decision on such a time-sensitive challenge. While Mark thinks that the dress looks "tortured" and doesn't like red and black together, Georgina also wishes that the colors sat better together. They appreciate the fact that she is ambitious but think that to ensure flawless execution, she must learn to manage her time.

Isaac compares Sweet P's dress to a prom dress, while Mark dubs it a dirndl skirt. Angela likes the daring color element but thinks that it was more of a day dress and James agrees that it's definitely not the Metropolitan. They think that she's lost her way and her vision went out the window.

In the end, it's Sweet P who comes in last and is eliminated from the competition.

"The best thing about this experience has been meeting all the other designers, who I respect and watched and now have gotten to know in such a short amount of time," she said following her exit. "Some people are gonna love my stuff and some people are not and it doesn't matter at the end of the day. I still have a really happy life."

Project Runway: All Stars airs Thursdays at 9/8c on Lifetime.
