'Bachelor' host Chris Harrison 'struck by meanness towards Shawntel'

By
The Bachelor host Chris Harrison has admitted that he was "struck by how mean" the women were towards late arrival Shawntel Newton.

Funeral director Newton, who previously appeared on Brad Womack's season of The Bachelor, made a surprise appearance during this week's cocktail party in a last-minute bid to join the race for Flajnik's heart.

However, the other bachelorettes didn't hold back when it came to expressing their unhappiness at her arrival.

Speaking to Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS-FM radio show, host Harrison said: "I knew this wasn't going to go great. I knew they wouldn't be happy but I didn't think it would be a nuclear meltdown. I was really struck at just how mean the girls got, that was the difference."

Seacrest then played audio of one bachelorette who claimed to be comforted by the thought that Newton's thighs were bigger than her own, to which Harrison responded: "You think those things, we all do, but you don't say it out loud!"

Newton, who revealed that she and Flajnik had spoken before he became The Bachelor and she had felt a connection, was ultimately unsuccessful in her bid to join the show when Flajnik chose not to give her a rose at the rose ceremony.

"As it turns out I think she saw a little bit more into it than she did but nevertheless I think a large part of the reason he didn't keep her was to avoid the disaster and meltdown that was happening," added Harrison.

Flajnik wrote in his People blog that he had also been surprised by the mean comments directed towards Newton, saying: "I mean I knew it was a bold move on Shawntel's part, but some of the women took it a bit too far."

He also said that Newton had been right in feeling a connection between them but this just wasn't the right time to pursue a relationship.

The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
